Suttle Projects are Awarded the Baiter Park Sluice Channel Upgrade Project

We’re delighted to share that we’ve been awarded the programme of works to upgrade the sluice channel linking Poole Park to Poole Harbour, a vital piece of infrastructure that’s ready for renewal.

The existing sluice channel and gate have reached the end of their operational life, with their deteriorating condition posing significant risks to the park’s operations, public access, and environmental safety. Previous repair works, including concrete bagwork to address scouring at the base of the sheet piles, are no longer a viable long-term solution.

Project Overview

The planned works will involve removing the current concrete bridge deck and replacing it with a series of 3.5m x 3.5m precast box culvert sections within the channel.

To carry out these works safely and efficiently, we’ll be installing a temporary access track into Baiter Park to position the culvert units using a 70T telescopic crawler crane. The project’s location is adjacent to a Network Rail infrastructure which means that any works need to be undertaken under a BAPA licence, with strict protocols in place to protect both the railway and the surrounding ecological environment.

Supporting the Local Environment

Careful ecological management is a key aspect of this project. Alongside the culvert works, we’ll be reinstating earth and enhancing public spaces, including upgrades to footpaths and cycleways in Baiter Park. The installation of trash screens and a new concrete apron to the box culvert will further improve the area’s functionality for years to come.

We’re proud to play a part in safeguarding this essential connection between Poole Park and Poole Harbour. The scheme not only addresses immediate structural and safety concerns but also brings long-term environmental and community benefits to one of the area’s most cherished green spaces.
