We’re delighted to share that Suttle Projects has been awarded the contract to deliver the Timber Groyne Renewal Programme as part of the Poole Bay Beach Management Scheme, taking place in winter 2025 and winter 2026. This is a significant coastal protection project for the Dorset coast; blending engineering, environmental care, and community value.
Why this work matters
Bournemouth’s beach is more than just a tourism icon; the seafront supports local economy, recreation, wildlife, and infrastructure. The timber groynes are essential defensive structures: they retain sand, reduce erosion, and buffer against the forces of storms and tides. Over time, exposure to marine conditions, marine life, weathering, and wear means that renewal is essential to ensure these structures continue to function safely and effectively.
What the Timber Groyne Renewal Project Involves
- Renewal of 7 timber groynes along Bournemouth Beach from East Cliff to Boscombe.
- The works run through the winter months, when the beach is quieter, however this does mean it is more exposed to higher wave energy and erosion forces; meaning timing, material performance, and construction methods must all account for more challenging conditions.
- Close coordination with local authorities, stakeholders and the public.
- Ensuring that the beach remains accessible, clean, and as uninterrupted as possible during works.
What we’ll be doing
Over the course of the contract, Suttle Projects will be replacing 7 groynes from East Cliff to Boscombe. The Map below shows the order in which the groyne renewal will be taking place.
Each new groyne is going to be constructed using a mixture of new and recycled tropical hardwood, selected for their strength, durability and resistance to marine life.
