Resolving structural flaws and risks, for example with seawalls designed to resist coastal erosion, always has to be done in the context of preserving what’s special and unique.

Heritage and environmental groups are the guardians of the heritage. We need their help to understand the story and the significance of particular features. Collaboration needs to happen early and often with conservation officers, harbour commissioners and local interest groups to accommodate their priorities into the design.

Temporary Works Are Sensitive

Heritage structures bring added complications to the design of temporary works. We take great care to ensure that scaffolding, working platforms, cofferdams and other structures don’t overload or undermine potentially fragile building fabric.

These considerations extend to methods, machinery and fixing details we are able to use to ensure, for example, that excessive vibration does not weaken the surrounding structures. We also have to remain sensitive to the overall visual impact of temporary works.

However robust and resilient the repair, nobody’s going to thank us if it sticks out as an out-of-context eyesore. The methods and materials used in the original construction typically govern our choices. So our supply chain includes relevant specialists in traditional crafts such as stonemasonry.

Live Environments

Heritage structures such as harbour walls and bridges are still working assets that people rely on. So we typically plan for safe working in a live environment. This demands careful project phasing, traffic and pedestrian management, and clear communication with stakeholders so heritage assets stay safe and accessible while works progress.​
