On The Stokes Bay East Seawall Replacement despite the numerous project challenges and unforeseen obstructions, the piling was finished two weeks ahead of schedule and the project completed including additional works within the original completion date. On the Arne Moors Wetland Habitat Outfall Structure Suttle Projects acted quickly to provide an immediate solution to complete the culvert on schedule, despite encountering very challenging and unanticipated ground conditions.
The issue could have significantly impacted the programme had it not been for the responsive and creative in-house design solution that meant work could continue uninterrupted. When excavating material from within the cofferdam, unanticipated ground conditions were encountered. As the proposed formation level was approached, the ground water began to rise, flooding the works area and preventing construction of the new reinforced concrete structure.
Responding immediately to rectify the situation, the in-house design team devised a system of ground pressure relief wells, which were installed inside the perimeter of the cofferdam. These were highly effective in dispersing the floodwater and preventing further ground water ingress from below the proposed structure.
Network Rail appointed Suttle Projects as Principal Contractor to undertake the £11.5m safety critical Langport Embankment remediation works. The total embankment length was 1.25km, stretching either side of the River Parrett, and reaching 8 metres above the surrounding flood plain, an area of sensitive ecological and environmental interest. The works would be delivered in three phases over a two-year period, and upon completion would guarantee the long-term reliability of rail services at this important location.
Upon contract award our in-house design team undertook a full review of the client’s design proposals. We identified potential issues that could then be proactively and collaboratively resolved before they could impact outturn costs and programme delays. When it was identified that existing powerlines were lower than specified, we devised a new design and methodology solution that was accepted without revision, and the potential programme delay was averted.
