At Suttle Projects, we pride ourselves on our projects simplified methodology; using creativity, sustainability, reliability and productivity in all of our processes. Our recent Wyke Regis Slipway Repair is a perfect example.
The Wyke Regis Bridging Camp slipways, used by the Ministry of Defence for amphibious training and boating operations, had suffered severe weathering and tidal erosion over time, compromising their structural integrity. To fully assess and repair the slipways, we engineered and installed temporary sheet-pile cofferdams around each slipway toe, allowing us to dewater and inspect the works safely and effectively.
Creativity was at the heart of this project. Faced with unknown deterioration beneath the water, we collaborated with Priory Formworks to set up an on-site temporary prefabrication facility, enabling rapid, flexible design responses as conditions were uncovered. This adaptability ensured efficient decision-making without disrupting the programme.
Our focus on sustainability guided key environmental measures. Working within The Fleet Lagoon; a sensitive marine ecosystem, meant engaging an ecologist for jet-washing operations, performing fish rescue procedures in consultation with the Environment Agency, and prefabricating concrete components away from the water’s edge to prevent contamination. We also used bio-oil in all plant as standard to reduce the environmental impact of our machinery.
In terms of reliability and productivity, meticulous planning ensured the project remained on schedule and within budget despite tidal constraints and restricted site access. We scheduled works around tidal windows and extended work into Saturdays where necessary, and our use of specialist equipment, including Volvo and Komatsu excavators with Movax attachments, allowed us to install and remove cofferdams efficiently.
Enhancements such as the modular edging beam design and the addition of permanent sheet piles at a deteriorated slipway corner both improved long-term durability and demonstrated our wider commitment to delivering long-lasting, cost-effective solutions.
