Rail is a demanding sector where performance and value for money are always in the spotlight. Project overruns are highly visible as well as disruptive. Budgets are constrained. And often there’s a need to act urgently and purposefully when an asset fails.

These pressures drove Suttle Projects to develop our projects: simplified approach to delivery. The essence of this is to identify and mitigate potential projects risks as early as possible, while always being alert to opportunities to save time, reduce cost and improve sustainability.

Translatable Capabilities

Project simplification is only deliverable consistently when it is an ingrained and embedded way of working. This has the added benefit of making the approach translatable across different sectors including coastal flood protection schemes, defence and water infrastructure.

Better risk management, efficiency and superior performance are universal goals for any type of civils project. 98% of projects delivered on-time and with zero non-compliance issues is a pretty good performance benchmark for any sector – particularly for projects in challenging locations, including coastal, inland marine, and environments with complex geology.

The Planning Framework

Our project planning framework achieves accurate scoping and early identification of potential issues. Groundwater and sub-surface conditions, along with unexpected underground obstructions can be significant unknown factors that will disrupt any project schedule. Early delays because of unforeseen geotechnical factors have a habit of snowballing.

With major investments planned in water infrastructure, coastal erosion protection and defence, it’s worth pausing to see whether procurement and delivery models are set up to succeed. The need for reform in defence infrastructure procurement has recently been highlighted – moving towards a model of longer-term alliances and early contractor involvement that has proved successful in rail frameworks.

We’ve found over the years that rapid resolution relies on streamlined communication, delegated authority and rapid decision making, all linked to relentless budget and timing control. These capabilities are augmented by geotechnical expertise and self delivery using our own material supplies, plant and transport.

Whatever the sector, the effective projects are built from the ground up, with a process designed to simplify delivery, reduce risks and deliver maximum value.
