Working in live environments demand meticulous up-front attention to detail, buildable designs, and clear communications throughout planning, execution and handover.
By way of example Suttle Project’s recently completed the design and installation of replacement handrailing to B Lock at Portsmouth Naval Base for KBS Maritime.
The new handrail system was carefully designed to fit seamlessly into the live dockside working environment, being fully demountable it can be specially reconfigured to minimise disruption to specific quayside activities and vessel movements.
Following our design end-user meeting with the KBS and Royal Navy docking team it was established that if the proposed edge protection could be moved closer to the dock edge than originally planned it would improve quayside usability and sightlines for the port team.
Moving the replacement handrail closer did result in a clash between the existing edge protection and the proposed new system. To mitigate the impact of this a temporary free-standing edge protection system used in high rise rooftop environments was utilised to maintain safe dockside working, prevent delays and avoided any consequential disruption to live quay operations.
